About The Report

Avista’s Sustainability Report was first published in 2009 as an abbreviated review of our economic, environmental Go to GRI Guidelines for more informationand social responsibility strategies and the impacts of our company’s business operations on the communities we serve. This second report (2010) follows the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3 Guidelines and the Electric Utility Sector Supplement (EU) for information gathering and reporting. The GRI elements were reviewed by and the Application Level B was affirmed by GRI.

The report is focused solely on Avista, the regulated utility business unit of Avista Corp. Data and information in the report is current as of Dec. 31, 2009, except where otherwise noted. The materiality of information is determined by the level of significance each issue has in terms of its level of

  • Stakeholder interest, as measured by surveys, focus groups, formal and informal discussions and anecdotal information;
  • Its impact on our business today and in the future, as determined by state and federal regulatory and voluntary data reporting, and financial significance; and
  • Society’s interest, in terms of its impact on the communities we serve and its importance, relevance or perception in part as reflected by coverage through traditional and social media channels.

Our 2010 report is web-based. We printed a small number of the “Summary Report of Avista’s 2010 Sustainability Report” to distribute to various groups of people who have an interest in Avista’s sustainable business practices.

While this report was not reviewed by outside stakeholders prior to its publication, we anticipate sharing it with the stakeholder groups we regularly interface with throughout the coming year. In doing so, we hope to engage individuals and organizations in an ongoing dialog about our sustainable business operations and solicit suggestions about content for Avista’s future sustainability reports. As we develop our sustainability reporting program, we will evaluate a more formalized stakeholder review and input plan, as well as plans for regularly updating information.

This report contains forward-looking statements regarding the company’s current expectations. Forward-looking statements are all statements other than historical facts. Such statements speak only as of the date of the report and are subject to a variety of risks and uncertainties, many of which are beyond the company’s control, which could cause actual results to differ materially from the expectations. These risks and uncertainties include, in addition to those discussed herein, all of the factors discussed in the company’s Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended Dec. 31, 2009.

Addendum:  August 2010 -- Following the review of this report by the Global Reporting Initiative, additional copy has been added in the Natural Resource Protection section, under Our Environment, to reflect Avista's relationships with indigenous people: the Coeur d'Alene Tribe.
