Securing Energy: Planning Ahead (PDF)
Presented by: Dick Storro, Vice President Energy Resources, Avista
We face major changes in the energy industry and maintain a diversified mix of energy resources so energy is there when you need it.
Audience Polling Questions
Q. Which of the following resources are renewable? (Choose as many as you want)
e. Natural gas
Answer: Hydropower, wind, solar, biomass and geothermal are all considered renewable power sources, however each of the above resources has different environmental and economic impacts that we must consider when deciding how we will secure power.
Q. Choose the three lowest-cost energy resources.
e. Natural gas-fired
Answer: If we were to build new generation resources, hydro, geothermal and biomass would have the lowest approximate costs of capital, operations and fuel over a 20-year period. (See chart in presentation – source: Sixth Power Plan.) However, prices are always in flux, and building new generation resources would involve factors such as geographic limitations, environmental requirements and development costs. As we plan for meeting growing customer demand over the next 20 years, Avista believes we must do more than just purchase or build new generation – we must continue to focus on energy efficiency programs and making our own system more efficient through efforts such as hydroelectric upgrades and smart grid technologies.
