When you turn up the stove under a pot of soup, you may not think about what goes on behind the switch. And that’s okay. It’s our job to build and maintain the delivery system it takes to bring natural gas to you.
But that vast infrastructure - and its upkeep - takes money, and it’s a cost you’ll find reflected in our rates. Our rates also take fluctuations in the open market price of natural gas into account, even though we never earn additional profit when those costs increase.
Finally, certain tariffs are built into our rates to fund things like low income assistance programs, which provide energy assistance to some of our community’s most vulnerable citizens.
While many components go into determining our rates, the entire process is overseen by a utilities commission in Washington, Idaho and Oregon. Commission members are appointed by your elected representatives and in that way, they are accountable to you to ensure that our rates are fair and reasonable. And we work closely with the commissions to make sure they are.
