Refrigerator Recycling Program

Save more than energy

Do you really need that energy- burning second refrigerator? While it’s true, older refrigerators may not be spoiling your food, they are spoiling the environment. In fact, recycling a single older refrigerator is like taking one ton of Carbon Dioxide out of air. And it could account for 20 percent of an average customer’s total usage each year. That adds up to as much as $50 on your energy bill. Research shows that the majority of spare refrigerators use more than five times the energy of newer models.

You’re not average, of course, and we have a terrific solution for retiring your old fridge or freezer.

Our new Residential Second Refrigerator Recycling Program will take your older freezers and refrigerators away. Our program partner, JACO, picks them up and takes them to a specially designed recycling facility where they’ll recycle nearly 95 percent of each, and safely dispose of toxins and the ozone-destroying gases in foam insulation. Unless a refrigerator is disposed of properly, foam and refrigerant products from these old appliances release thousands of tons of ozone-depleting CFC-11 into the atmosphere each year.

We give you $30 an appliance for every qualified pick up—that means we’re paying you to haul it away. What’s more, Avista offers rebates to help you replace it with a more efficient ENERGY STAR model--$25 toward your new efficient fridge and $100 toward a new freezer.

Here’s what you need to do:

  • Be an Avista electric or combination electric and natural gas customer
  • Own the appliance you want to recycle
  • Make sure your refrigerator or freezer is in good working condition and is empty at the time of pick up
  • See if it was manufactured pre-1995 (1995 or earlier)
  • Sign up online with our partner, JACO Environmental, at www.jacoinc.net or call (877) 577-0510 to schedule a pickup
