Avista's
first hydroelectric development, Monroe Street has been producing power since
1890! In fact, the plant has been generating electricity longer than any
other hydroelectric development currently operating in the state of
Washington! The dam, rebuilt in 1974, was constructed at a natural
waterfall (Spokane's "Lower Falls"). A new underground
powerhouse was completed in 1992.
Adjacent to Riverfront Park, the scenic falls below Monroe Street
spillway can be seen from five viewing areas:
Powerhouse viewpoint in Huntington Park
Veteran's Park on the north bank
Monroe Street Bridge west of the dam
Viewing rooms at the Spokane Public Library on the
south bank
Seasonal Riverfront Park gondola ride which passes
over the falls.
The nearby Huntington Park Natural Area, owned and
maintained by Avista for public use, offers opportunities for viewing
urban wildlife, and contains a fenced promenade near the falls.
