Capable of meeting the annual energy needs of 130,000 households, Noxon
Rapids possesses the largest generating capacity of any of Avista's eight
hydroelectric developments, and boasts the second-largest generating
capability of any hydro plant in the entire state of Montana.
Approximately 700 feet wide at the base, the dam contains over 500,000
yards (equivalent to 50,000 full mixer truckloads) of concrete!
Located on the Clark Fork River, the development lies about 20 miles upstream
of Avista's Cabinet Gorge HED. When the development was completed in 1959,
the energy produced there nearly doubled the company's generating
capability.
The Noxon reservoir and surrounding lands contribute to many recreational
opportunities, ranging from boating and backpacking in the summer, to
cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in the winter. In cooperation with
local communities and agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service and Montana
Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, Avista has helped develop and improve many
recreation sites in the area. Through these partnerships, the project
reservoir's fish, wildlife, and recreational benefits have been greatly
enhanced. In fact, the Noxon reservoir is one of the top bass fisheries in
the state of Montana; numerous tournaments are held there each year.
