Steam traps are automatic valves found on the steam distribution lines of a boiler heating system. Their purpose is to drain condensate, thereby keeping the steam system operating optimally and maintaining steam quality. Most of these devices use a type of float, thermostatic disk, or bimetallic element, to actuate a drain valve. Once the steam has condensed to become hot water, it is returned to the boiler.
Avista offers rebates for the repair or replacement of failed steam traps. If a steam trap is replaced it must be replaced with a new working valve trap. Rebates will not be paid more than one time in five years for the replacement or repair of a steam trap. In order to be eligible for rebates each trap must have a strainer.
