Side-Stream Filtration Incentive Program
Cooling towers help regulate temperature by rejecting heat from air-conditioning systems or by cooling hot equipment. In doing so, they use significant amounts of water. As the water circulates through the system, the cooling towers continually collect solid matter from airborne dust, pollution, salts and other products. Depending on the location of the open loop cooling tower up to 4 pounds of debris per ton can be cleaned from the air into the cooling water system per year. This can reduce system operating efficiency and can increase maintenance and cleaning requirements.
A permanent side-stream filtration system can remove these contaminants before they increase the costs of operating the system or shut the system down. With side-stream filtration, a portion of the water filters continuously. The whole system is filtered several times per day. Side-stream filtration works on the principle that continuous particle removal will keep the system clean. The filtration goal is not to make drinking water but to remove the fine dirt, dust, smoke and organic particles that collect in water and can settle on the heat exchanging surfaces of the chiller.
Side-Stream filtration does not replace normal maintenance, but helps the equipment operate more efficiently between normal cleaning and inspections.
Some of the benefits of a side-stream filtration system include:
- Reduction in corrosion & erosion
- Easily installed on new or existing systems
- Improves plant efficiency
- Extends equipment life
